Supported by the ‘Foreign Experts Program’ high-endforeign expert project at Shanghai University of Engineering Science, weinvited Professor William Yang, Principal Scientist at CSIRO in Australia andan internationally renowned expert in experimental fluid mechanics, to give aseries of lectures on the topic of fluid measurement technology and engineeringapplications. The project consisted of four lectures held in 8B222, withenthusiastic participation from faculty and students who filled in the venue. The series of lectures, hosted by A/Prof Yidan Shang, began on the 3rdof September and was completed on the 20th of November, achievingremarkable success with solid support from the School of Mechanical andAutomotive Engineering.

The series of lectures focused on Prof.Yang’s over 30 years of fundamental research in fluid measurement technologyand his valuable experiences of collaborating with global industrial partners. These experiences helped young lecturers and students at the University. He broadenedtheir global perspectives in engineering research and research methods, as wellas their understanding of translating fundamental research outcomes intoindustrial applications through collaborations between academia and industry. The four lectures are summarized as follows.

Lecture One: Introduction to Basic FluidMeasurement Techniques

On September 3, the series of lecturesbegan with ‘Introduction to Basic Fluid Measurement Techniques’. Prof. Yangexplained the fundamental principles of pressure measurement, flow velocitymeasurement, and flow rate measurement in an approachable manner. Hedemonstrated the setup and operational processes for measurement experimentsand provided a detailed analysis of methods for quantifying flow velocity, pressure, turbulence, and other flow characteristics, as well as the importanceof error analysis. The lecture led to active audience participation andfruitful discussions.
